What Does It Mean To Be A Godly Wife?

Looking to build a marriage that’s godly, reverent, and lasting?

Being a godly wife means you are a follower of Jesus Christ, and you try to learn and implement all He teaches about your marriage. Like our article about being a Godly husband, here’s some examples of how to live out being a Godly wife according to Proverbs 31.

A Godly Wife Is Trusthworthy

Proverbs 31:11-12 “The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life.”

A Godly wife remains trust-worthy in all she does. If you have entered into a covenant relationship before God, your duty as a wife starts with continuing to work on unwavering trust between you and your husband.

In order to have a long, healthy, and God-fearing marriage, you need to have trust between you and your husband but more importantly, between you and God’s perfect plan for your marriage.

A Godly Wife Provides

Proverbs 31:13, 15 “She seeks wool and flax, and works with willing hands… She rises while it is yet night and provides food for her household and portions for her maidens.”

Most people know the husband as the provider in a relationship. However, being a Godly wife requires you to provide just as much in other capacities aside from the traditional fiscal responsibility.

As a Godly wife, you are called to provide your husband and family with stability, willing hands to work and a spirit full of giving.

Financially providing is incredibly important, but emotionally providing is just as influential and oftentimes this responsibility falls on the wife.

A Godly Wife Is Generous

Proverbs 31:20 “She opens her hand to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy.”

A Godly wife is generous because of her love for Christ. If the husband and wife are striving to be generous with each other and those around them, they will have a deeper relationship within their marriage and with Christ because their actions will be selfless.

Generosity applies to all areas of your life (marriage, friendships, taking time to volunteer, etc.), not just your financial situation.

A Godly Wife Is Wise

Proverbs 31:25-26 “Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.”

Solomon knew that being blessed with wisdom from God was an incredible responsibility to be used for His will.

“Opening your mouth with wisdom”. In many situations this is using that Godly wisdom Solomon talks about to know when to speak. A Godly wife is clothed in strength and dignity and has the wisdom to know when to speak, when to stay silent, when to teach and when to learn.

A Godly Wife Fears The Lord

Proverbs 31:30 “Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”

God tells us many times throughout the Bible that above all, we should love and fear the Lord. In our society today we see women being rewarded for being charming or beautiful. Solomon tells us that these are fleeting and the true test of a woman’s character is through her devotion to Christ.

A Godly wife is not concerned with the things of this world but is constantly striving to be a servant to God and those around her. Her love of God is what motivates her to be the best wife, coworker, friend, daughter, and mom she can be.

You have to make the daily choice to be a Godly wife through not only your words, but your actions. Not only because you love your husband, but because your devotion to Christ further deepens that love and desire to be a Godly wife.

John 13:35 “By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
